Stacey L. Clardy, MD, PHD, FAAN, is both clinical and research faculty in the Division of Neuroimmunology and Autoimmunology within the Department of Neurology, as well as a Neurologist at the Staff Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Health System, and a consultant at Primary Children’s Hospital. She holds an adjunct appointment in Population Health Sciences.
She established the Autoimmune Neurology Clinic at the University of Utah—one of just a few clinics in the United States focused on serving this group of patients, and the program houses largest group of both pediatric and adult Autoimmune Neurology Fellowship-trained faculty in the country. Dr. Clardy is also the Founder/Director of the Autoimmune Neurology Fellowship program. Her clinical specialization and research focus is in the field of autoimmune neurology, which encompasses the evaluation and management of both autoimmune and paraneoplastic disorders of the nervous system. The spectrum of autoimmune and paraneoplastic neurological disorders intersects all traditional neurology subspecialties, including movement disorders, epilepsy, behavioral/cognitive, neuromuscular, autonomic, demyelinating, and neuro-oncologic.
Dr. Clardy is currently the principal investigator (PI) of an NIH U01 grant (via the NeuroNEXT Clinical Trials Network) supporting the ExTINGUISH Trial—the first prospective, international, and randomized clinical trial for NMDA receptor encephalitis, at over 37 sites, including 2 European sites, with enrollment ongoing. Dr. Clardy and her mentees have received extramural research funding and competitive scientific awards from the NIH, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Sumaira Foundation, the Immune Deficiency Foundation, and the Siegel Rare Neuroimmune Association and others.
She is devoted to the care of patients affected by antibody-mediated disorders of the nervous system, both autoimmune and paraneoplastic. Her areas of focus include autoimmune encephalitis, neurosarcoidosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD), stiff-person syndrome, myelopathy/transverse myelitis, and central nervous system complications of rheumatologic disease.
She serves as the Chair of the Autoimmune Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). She is the current Editor of the Neurology®Podcast and also the Editor of the Neurology Minute™ and a member of the Editorial Board of Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, as well as serving on the Publications Committee of the AAN. She is also the director of the biannual Western Intermountain Neurological Organization (WINO) Conference.
