Research

Scientific investigation is critical to the mission of our stroke center and for the development of fellows.

  • The University of Utah was funded as an NIH StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center in 2013, providing exposure to national stroke trials and leadership. UT StrokeNet also provides funding for formal research methodology training for stroke fellows.
  • You will not only enroll patients in multi-center trials, but will also lead the planning and implementing of such trials.
  • You will be mentored in the development and execution of individual research projects.
  • Research Mentors and potential collaboration opportunities are too numerous to list, but include: Cardiac arrhythmia center (CARMA, Dr. Marrouche), HHT and CCM centers (Dr. Kevin Whitehead), genetic epidemiology (Dr. Albright), hematopathology (Drs. Rogers and Smock), rehabilitation science (Dr. Richards, thrombosis (Dr. Weyrich), vascular genetics (Dr. Li), and advanced neuroimaging (Dr. Parker).

Education

  • You will design and lead the neurovascular and critical care resident lecture series.
  • You will have numerous opportunities to hone teaching skills, including lecturing to spoke hospitals in the TeleStroke network.
  • You will be given speaking opportunities at the region’s Annual Stroke Symposium.
  • You will have the opportunity to attend the Western States Stroke Association meeting, a yearly gathering of community and academic stroke experts in the western states.
  • Funding is available for yearly attendance at the International Stroke Conference.

Clinical

  • Acute care: Pre-hospital notification; 24/7 intra-arterial therapy; and multi-state TeleStroke program.
  • Hospitalization: dedicated neuro acute floor and neurocritical care unit.
  • Rehabilitation: stroke specific inpatient and outpatient and innovative wellness clinic.
  • Outpatient clinics:  adult and pediatric vascular neurologists in clinic with expertise in unusual causes of stroke, including: CADASIL, CCM, APS, CVT, PRES, and dissection.
